Why don't any of the cyclists heading for Groats take the National cycle route from Helmsdale up the Strath of Kildonan through Forsinard and Kinbrace? Much less traffic, no mega steep hills, nicer views and can avoid the hole that is Wick.
It is longer but I don't know if it would take so much more time as you would avoid the steep braes between Helmsdale and the Ord of Caithness and Berriedale.

rdaved - sorry for the late response, I've only just noticed your comment!
My honest answer is that I didn't really know about the cycle route :-$ It's such hard work trying to work out a LEJOG route when you don't know the areas at all, that I think by the time we got to the end, staying at the hostel in Helmsdale, we just took the "obvious" route up the East coast! But given your recommendation, I may well think about changing our plans - thanks!
