I've viewed the nostalgic 1985 DVD of the EBTC Double Century and can't fathom the reasoning behind adding lengthy gravel sections.
Seems this obscure mapped route is not the fast, all-sealed route that most of us remember from the original 80s rides. I don't recall any gravel diverts through Cobaw Forest or Blackfellows Gate Rd (Lancefield comes to memory though); it was all sealed from end to end and attracted road bikes (as well as oddball things that were 'cool' for the time, like Moultons and recumbent trikes). I do remember some testy climbs toward Bendigo (Mandurang) and more coming back near Sunbury (?). The route with gravel diverts is fine for touring bikes, but of dubious merit for road bikes. Does anybody have info on the original all-sealed route up and back?
