I have had a few different light kits, all battery powered, but none were as bright as I would like. Any suggestions on a ready-made or home-made light kit that will actually light up the road? I want to spend less than $200 U.S. and get at least 20w halogen, or equivalent in led would be even better. I need about 2 hours run time. thanks.

Hi Chewy - I use Electron's 20W/10W combo with the 4.5 Ah NiMH battery. It was about GBP 45 which is, I guess just under a 100 USD. I can just about manage off-road riding with them and I think their perfectly good enough on-road. If I honestly thought doubling my money would have given me significant benefits I'd have gone for it. One of my doubts is whether LED technology is THERE yet. Can LEDs replace Halogens, I've got my doubts. HIDs could be the way to go but they're pricey. Anyone out there used LEDs AND Halogens and in a position to comment?

    Hope MHO helps.

    Hey Chewy,
Found a pretty neat LED headlight at my local KMart It's marketed under the Ray O Vac label and the name is "Xtreme Sportsman K2." Now with a name like that ya gotta love it. It's rated @ 3 watts, uses 3 AA (not AAA) It has a separate battery box that has a red LED mounted on it with 2 modes, flashing and steady. The headlight has 3 power levels and a flashing mode. The headlight and battery box are switched separately and connected with a stout cable. The whole thing looks pretty well made and I have yet to have any problems. It's described as "water resistant." I was able to mount mine to my helmet with elastic straps. It was a pretty easy "bodge" and the thing looks like it was just made to go on there. It throws out a REALLY BRIGHT light with a good "cone" I'm able to see pretty well going 13-15 mph.
The headlight starts to dim considerably after about 5 hours on a set of alkaline (1.5 V) batteries. I imagine a set of rechargeables would be cost-effective Oh yeah the thing retails for about $32.00 Check it out.
