I have a Thule tow bar mounted rack that carries 3 bikes upright supported by the wheels and braced by upright hoops that fold up from the rack. Obviously you need a tow bar, but the rack fits on to the ball in a couple of mins max and it is really easy to load the bikes. No danger of scratching the car as with tailgate mounted racks, no danger of destroying your back which is a danger with putting bikes on the roof, and little danger of wrecking the bike either.

I use one of these. It's very easily fitted, easy to load and safe. It can be padlocked to the car and the bikes can be locked to the carrier.
