   This cycling tour of about 270 km brings 3 of the 4 largest Belgian cities together. Ghent, Antwerp and Liège. In combination with 1 of my other Bikely Routes, it is now possible to cross nearly the whole of Belgium from the east (quite close to the borders with Germany and the Netherlands) to the west and that's the North Sea. And still you are cycling along nothing but canals, rivers and other waterways. It's not only Belgian chocolates and beer that should convince you to try Belgium. ;-)
   
   There is another shorter and bicycle friendly way to get from Liège to Antwerp and that's along the towpaths of the Koning Albertkanaal (King Albert Canal). That's about 130 km, while my suggestion between Antwerp and Liège is about 180 km. One big difference however. Due to the enlargement of the Albertkanaal in recent decades, the banks are quite monotonous. But if you're looking for a car-free-cyclist-speedway (!), the canal will be your best friend.
   
   If you're more into enjoying Belgian rural landscapes and the intimicy of 19th century canals lined up with trees, this route will make your mouth water. While cycling from Ghent to Liège, you will discover the magnificent river Scheldt (Schelde), Antwerp, a first small part of the Albertkanaal, the Dessel-Schotenkanaal, the Bocholt-Herentalskanaal, the Zuid-Willemsvaart, again a small part of the Albertkanaal, the river Maas (La Meuse) and Liège.
