How much traffic is there on skyline/ how scary is it? are there any other scary parts on this route? is skyline the best route to palo alto?
  1.
Took this route from the beginning to Belmont. Beautiful scenery, the directions are very clear. In answer to the previous comment, I found the traffic along skyline to be light (I rode early Saturday morning). The scariest part was riding along 280, but that last for about 2 minutes.
    I highly recommend this ride!

    There's a better route:

The linked route keep you off Skyline more, and avoids the scary part of biking on 280. You've to zoom in quite a bit to really notice the difference; the route pops off of Skyline (and onto a bike path) at the northern end of San Andreas Lake. You've to keep an eye out for the bike path entrance, but it's not really too hard to find.

It's a really nice/safe/scenic bike path that's the highlight of my commute. The bike path runs right along the water for both reservoirs. And it's not one of those bike paths that's more suitable for pedestrians and slow bikers. It's a proper bike path.
