100-200 2007 Route

    This is my all-time favorite ride. It travels from the North Troy Border station at the US-Canadian border and ends a little over 200 miles away at the Massachusetts border, primarily following Vermont Rte. 100, an exceptionally pretty road. I started doing this ride over 20 years ago, when I was a mechanic at a Vermont bike shop. A changing group of us did it every year for six years, generally on the Sunday closest to the summer solstice. It's a great double-century that should be within the capabilities of any really fit cyclist. That, and the novelty of going border-to-border seems to make it really appealing to riders.

I'll state right up front that I cannot say that I invented this ride. When we started doing it in 1984, we knew that the US XC Ski Team had done the length of the state multiple times, and had done it in a lot less time than we ever did. However, from what I have been able to learn, including information from a person who was on the team and who did the ride at least once, they did not follow Rte 100, but went down the flatter, west side of the state.

    There have probably been others over the years prior to 1984 who did this ride in a single day and there have certainly been many who have done it since. However, I believe I can accurately state that our runs during the 1980s established the 100/200 as one of Vermont's truly great rides and worthy of a notch in your handlebars.
