    Kevin Pfeiffer: Re: Ctrl-clicking (next/previous):
No. I wish you were right, but Ctrl-clicking actually forces the next point with a note no matter how far it is. That's a good idea, but It would be more convenient and more intuitive if a simple click just moved you one point. But it's nice to know that there is a Ctrl-Click functionality.

Be able to find a location (for example to start your route) using longitude and latitude.

42-32-22(? :-) - You can do that already.
Put text a file called start.txt on your desktop with:

    <gpx><rte><rtept
    lat="41.8" lon="-88.1"
    ></rtept></rte></gpx>

[Obviously replace the two coordinates with the one's you want]. Then in Bikely:
Cerate route > Import > start.txt from your desktop.
    That's it.

@Peter-DG: Isn't that what I wrote -- that Ctrl-clicking takes you to the next point with a note?

    Kevin -
Sorry, I read your "note" as "node" - you were correct.
( I often have the right idea but get the details wrong :-)

Like Peter, I wish there was an easy way to jump single nodes at a time, it's very frustrating when you want to add a note somewhere between 2 close'ish notes, but back and forward jump to the 2 notes. Also when wanting to move a note to the adjacent node because you selected the wrong one (from a lower zoom level).

    BlueMM -
Moving a note is very easy -
Click on the FROM point - click in the note box - ctrl-A - ctrl-X
Click on the TO point - click in the note box - ctrl-V
    .
Selecting a point when they are close together can be tricky. Try clicking at the base (pointed bottom end) of the balloon, not on the round balloon itself. The hand with the index finger has to appear before you can click on the point. Obviously zooming in as far as you can helps.
    .
    Did you know:
[1] you can zoom in two levels closer in the "Satellite" view than in the "Map" view.
[2] you can zoom in (or out) using the mouse scroll wheel. The mouse position anchors the zoom center. You'll be amazed how handy this is if you haven't already used this trick.

    Peter,
Yeah, I'm aware of those tricks and have used them often.
I'm talking about the tricky point selection, where 2 points are very close together and selecting is hard. This is particularly hard when the section of the route is North-South, you go to click on the point and it jumps to a node above.
So I'd love some way of navigating single nodes at a time, maybe Shift-Clicking the < > buttons.

    BlueMM -
Your points must be very close together. When you're zoomed all the way in, a single balloon image covers only about 20 feet of riding distance. Each pixel covers covers about 9 inches and the balloon image is about 25 pixels.
    .
But - one trick I've used is: just grab either point and move it away. Put a note on which ever one needs that note. Move back the point you moved.

Forgot to mention, this is usually when zoomed out a bit. Sometimes I am editing over dialup and don't want a higher zoom level as that will take forever to load. I seem to do a bit of note fixing after route creation, and look at the cuesheet for missing/incorrect info. Being able to add/edit the notes while at a low zoom level (so the whole route fits) would be very beneficial. Ever better would be being able to edit the cuesheet from the cuesheet page without even viewing the route.

Oh! I usually tell people you can't do it over dial-up.
    .
I download the cue sheet into a spread sheet and don't bother to update/correct the cue sheet on bikely.com , and I add a link to the updated and reformated cue sheet (.pdf version) to the description field.

Problems with points that are too close together frequently arise when editing GPS tracks. There was talk here once of incorporating a filter that would thin these tracks out, but for now it's something one has to do, if desired, with a stand-alone application, before uploading.

With auto-follow there are many more points. This makes it hard to go back to a point and edit a section or comment. Could not there be a function to take you to a certain point, say a cue sheet node or even to go to a precise point, eg point no 457, from where you could with a bit of trial and error find the exact point you want.

The site is excellent for route-finding.

I have a couple of google maps issues... there are quite a few places where it's legal to cycle but not drive and it took me a while to realise I had to turn off "auto-follow the road" (so I'm commenting here to make it a FAQ).

Plus as a generic whine, at Peats Ridge Road/Pacific Hwy Google won't let you turn left, there's a 10m section of road missing by the look of it. google doesn't seem to want to know about problems like that.
  3.
Automatic cue sheets it is very time-consuming to type Street names into bikely. Is it possible to do something like Google directions? Google generates an automatic cue sheet. With Street names, mileage and right left turn information.

It would be really great of you could see Bridleways/canal tow paths or other routes that are ok for cycling even if they are not roads.

is it possibleto view any comments people have made on a route when you view that route? Bit tough wading through a couple of thousand comment topics ... could they also be organised by location too (or at least by country?). I do find the international flavour very interesting, but it would be nice to filter them when I'm looking for local route commments ...

When viewing a route, if a route has comments it says "1 comment" or "5 comments" in the Welcome box. Also hovering over the forum link while on a route shows the same thing.

    Great forum thread Scot,

Can I stick a request in for Bikely announcements/updates/development aims to be blogged on the site or stickied on the forum as announcements?

It would be good to know for instance what is going on with elevation calcs direct from the Bike Radar team rather than having to trawl through "Elevation not working..." threads to glean info as to what is going on (USGS up the spout I believe).

Apart from that, it is a great site which I use all the time. Keep up the good work.

    Sudholz,
I don't work for Bike Radar, I'm a site user just like you, but maybe you understand that and this reply is a way of reaching out to Bike Radar. You could also try e-mailing John Stevenson.

    GPX export options
Alhough this can be accomplished in Notepad with the way the Export GPX is now....
Split the GPX exports into three types of exports
    Export GPX track
    Export GPX waypoint list
    Export GPX route
  5.
Thanks for the info Scot_Gore will look out for the pointer, just hadn't come across any yet - I guess we're all too busy out ridin'.

I'd like to be able to change the line on parts of the routes - for example for optional detours. And I think the purple line doesn't always show well (in printed versions) against the route when using aerial (rather than road) view, which I do a lot as most of my routes avoid roads, especially for people with colour-blindness, so it might be good to be able to choose a colour for the route.

This is a wonderful site, and a great community. :)
