    Hello Bikely people,

I just recently discovered this site, and already I love it. It's the best tool I've found for creating bike routes.

There are a couple of features I'd like to see:

    (1) I'd like to be able to place arbitrary waypoints along a route to mark points of interest. I often want to show the location of a restaurant/playground/etc, but all I can really do is indicate in a routepoint comment that it's "nearby".

    (2) I wish I could enter a "description" for the route -- that would be printed at the top of the cue sheet, in addition to being available elsewhere (perhaps an additional pane in the info window).

    Thanks!

    Hi larsks

you can do this. You can place waypoints anywhere you want, either while you are creating the route or later on, the tools are very clear but if you aren't sure have a look at the help.

And I agree about the route description or overview - but I think that message must have got through as lots of people seem to ask for it.

    best wishes
    Chris

    > you can do this. You can place waypoints anywhere you want,

Really? The drawing interface only allows me to place *route* points -- that is, they're always connected to the current route. I haven't found a tool that lets me place arbitrary points that are not associated with the route.

Specifically, in the GPX export, they should show up as <wpt> elements.

If I've missed something, please let me know, because I'd love to see this feature.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise what you were asking for :o(

However I guess you could do a little deviation to the point of interest, returning straight back to the route at the same point.

I agree that it would be good to add points, and preferably icons, to a map.

Yeah, see, it would be great! For example, I'd like to design "scenic" routes for use by friends, and I'd like to indicate things like "nearby tasty restaurants" or "places to get ice cream" or "places with public restrooms" without having a route diversion to every one.

    General remarks re routes

larsks was also asking for a feature that lots of others have asked for as well, namely the ability to post some general remarks about a route, such as an overall discription, and I'd like to beat the drum again on that one.

The current situation is that remarks of that type need to be included in one of the route point comments, or as a comment posted separately in the Comments thread. A good example of the inadequacy of the first of these options is seen in the recently posted route Performance Cycle to Leechtown. The author of that route (mjansson) has some very interesting and informative notes, which are presented as a comment to the route's start point, but it turns out that the comment "bubble" is not large enough to display them all. It's especially unfortunate that the bubble's drop shadow, which is otherwise attractive, makes the last couple of lines virtuallly unreadable, at least on my display.

So please, John and Jules, give us the ability to present useful information like this in an effective manner.

And I should say, if this weren't such a great site, I wouldn't bother suggesting improvements, so please don't think this is simply unappreciative complaint. Do keep up the good work!
