WOW! There are some GREAT ideas in this thread. Pretty much everyone of them was a money winner.

My favorite idea though has to be the ability to have a "pallete" of markers. that can be added to any map at any point, completely a side from the route itself. These could be little caution symbols, simple stars to mark sites... and each one could be annotated with a description... even... and ESPECIALLY photos. To add a photo you should just accept a url to the photo and an optional link to the photo page. Which might be a page on a blog or a flickr page giving more info on the picture. All bikely would do would be to display a little thumbnail, whatever annotation they typed in, and a link for more info.

Great job btw, from the feedback I can tell people already are smitten with bikely love. Most startups would kill for this kind of good will. You need to capitalize on it and crank out regular releases of the top ideas... maybe get some angel investment. You've got a winner here.

Since the recent changes to Bikely the program sometimes hangs up when saving. The little wheel keeps spinning but nothing happens. Is there a way to stop and resave. Ive lost several routes this way and I have to start again.

How about the ability to add points in the middle of a sequence? I've had sections where there's kilometers of straight road, so I marked it with two points. Then, I realized there's something for me to comment on in the middle of the line. If I could maybe select the two points, click somewhere in the middle of them, adding a third point, it would be possible to add in that comment, or to slightly alter the straight line.

Wipp - you can. See this

Bob - I will investigate this, too.

    fantastic site.
    some suggestions-
    - route variations. facility to map and compare variations to an origin-destination route.
    - route metadata. facility to add total distance, total climb, and route description to metadata, to be displayed on route search page.

    I didn't mention so far: I really love bikely!Excellent!

Just another suggestion: I noticed that using gpsbabel at least Garmin eTrex refuses to load routes if the routepoints are not named. Was it possible to number the routepoints in the exported gpx-file? Thus one could upload the gpx-File to Garmin eTrex without further postprocessing.

I love bikely. Thanks for putting this up, it's awesome!

Feature suggestion: would it be possible to mash up Bikely and WikiMapia? That way you could see routes and the context of landmarks you're passing along the way.

Like every one else has said, great idea! This is a fantastic site that promotes good things. I'm new to the seattle area and would like to reiterate a point that Steven made. I like the idea of being able to have pictures on this site for difficult parts. Thanks again!

Excellent site - really useful and easy to use straight away. Just one suggestion - it would be useful to be able to copy routes and be able to reverse and edit them. I take a slightly different route to work than on my way back because of one-way systems and it would save having to replot the whole thing. Also, it would be good to take soemone else's route and be able to paste it in if it forms part of a longer route. Just a thought - keep up the good work!

It should be nice when I can attach some documents.

I have a description of my route in excel format also. It can be used for addition information.

Maybe it's possible to attach documents like pictures to the route points in the map. By that you can add pics of some traffic situations for example. Or pics of a steep hill.

Thank you for creating such a wonderful tool.

My only request is for a feature that allows you to search via a map, and see all routes that pass through a certain point or set of points. I find myself clicking on a lot of route descriptions, not sure if they are what i want.

    G'day Jules,

When I nominate tags for my routes I find that if I select too many then on the map they could run into 2 or three lines.

This text then overprints on the points selction area mking it sometimes impossible to access the back and forward buttons.

Any chance of having the tag area push the point selection area down as it increases in size so as to leave the point selection clear ?

Very good sight, thoroughly enjoy using it.

    Thanks Jules. Great site.

Could we have the ability to add a route description to the route please. At the moment, I'm doing this in the comments for the first point, but it would be nice to have that description as part of the route title. (similar has been requested earlier so if you're working on it, thanks).

Would it be possible to get the map physically larger on the screen? Going to full screen would be nice but something much larger than the current option.

Pretty neat stuff. I had to put my commute route in right away, and had fun with that. One thing I noticed when I put in the commute route is the 'Nearby' tab, that searches for and locates routes nearby. That's pretty neat, but once I select a route and it's shown on the map I can't seem to do anything with it. I can't "go to" that route to see more information about it, and if I search for the route by the name as shown in the Nearby drop down list the route isn't found. So that's a curious thing. Otherwise, lots of fun, and a great resource.

One suggestion that people have had is to add photos and such, but I would suggest just letting them add hyperlinks so that photos can go to things like Google photo or flickr, and videos could go to YouTube or something.

Great work Jules - this site is absolutely awesome and addictive.
As soon as I got off the bike this morning, I jumped on to put in my journey.
It looks like there is a bug when deleting routes - I had 3 maps that were as "works in progress". I decided I didnt want 2 of them & the delete button got rid of the first one on my list each time rather thsn the one I chose to delete. Thats a bummer coz one I lost I had spent ages on. Too bad, I will start it again.
Keep up the great work & thanks !!!!!

I'm getting a "phantom" description waypoint in my route:

    http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/2007-Ride-of-Silence-in-Austin-Texas

Pressing the "next point" button hits all the points with text, but around mid-route it also hits a point that has no description. I tried removing that point but it persists. It's a different point if I go backwards instead of forwards.

I'd like to be able to split a route once it's been added and saving the parts seperately.

    Possibly using the following methods
1 Nominating the point at which the route is split
2 Nominating a point afterwhich the rest of the points are deleted
3 Nominating the point range that will be deleted e.g. 242 - 482

    Any chance?

Deleting 200 point is a tedious task!

I built a route when the GPS elevation was not working and all the elevations showed 0. Now when I go back to the route I can get elevations if I move the point just a little. Is there a way to just "update all" points so I don't have to click on all the points again?

I have built a route in Italy and posted it on the site. The only problem I have is the plotting map does not have the cycle routes marked. There is a cycle route in this area of Italy which runs along a dam at the side of the river. This stretches many kms along the Adige River from Bolzano at least to Trento but further as well. This path offers perfect cycling conditions, butis not on the map.

Switch to satelite view. I can see most of the bike paths in my area in the photos.

I have several routes which involve paths instead of roads. Your best bet is to either use satelite or hybrid view ( I would recomend hybrid). when you zoom in you may be able to find the path. Sometimes the path is covered with trees but you will be able to see where the path runs. It helps if you have done the route and know any problems with the path.

I would like to be able to change what kind of line is being drawn. I mainly draw offroad routes. I would like to do a thick line for a fireroad. A thin line for singletrack. A dotted line for a technical section. A dashed line for a steep section, etc. Also I would like to be a able to color the lines. One color for multiuse trails. One for bikes. One for poaching.

    Sugs:

1- A search by elevation gained/decended and total distance. Great for masochists and braggards (ie 'My ride has 2300' of elev. in 13.5 miles'). Something simple like the craigslist for sale pages http://sfbay.craigslist.org/bik/

2 -An way to say 'return to start from this point retracing steps'. This would be good for the out-and-back loops that you currently wind up plotting double points on.

How about having two kinds of points, plain ones just to draw the route and commented ones (like the existing ones) that people will see when they view the map? I've just created a couple of commuting routes for my workmates and some points have important information on them but it's pure accident whether somebody will spot those particular ones.

Bikely is exactly what I've wanted for years, thanks Jules.

I'd like to be able to write a general comment about the route that could be accessed when people are looking at the route listings. eg "Route from airport to rail station with an opportunity to pick up camping gaz along the way (you can't take gaz cartridges by air). One third quiet suburbs, one third riverside cycle path and one third city centre"

    Chris,
Re: some points have important information on them but it's pure accident whether somebody will spot those particular ones.

Tell your workmates to hit "Start Tour" then click through the entire route to the end. When in start tour mode, the tour will ALWAYS stop at nodes with notes. Can't miss them and they come in context as they explore the route.

    Hope that helps

Quite right, but I think that chrisrust has a good point in general: an overview that can be available while perusing the route listings would be a very good thing. A mouse-over screen tip appeals to me, but there are probably lots of ways to accomplish this.

Thanks very much Scot, unfortunately I have 2000 workmates so I don't have any control over how they might user this :o) And I'm interested in functionality in general, not my particular maps. It just seems that nodes without information are of very little interest and prevent people from spotting the ones that matter. Some may religiously "take the tour" but a lot of people can be relied on to ignore the instructions and just rip the box open.

Jules, thank you thank you thank you, an absolutely fantastic site. Lets me tell the rest of the club where we're going on the weekend!

One functionality request I have is the ability to search for key words or phrases rather than just by location.

For Instance, routes including Cheddar Gorge in their name, which isn't near any particular city.
Either that or allow searches by smaller locations such as towns or villages.
    • CommentAuthorScot_Gore
    • CommentTimeMay 4th 2007

The search box looks for anything in the route title. For example I have a route with Col200 in the title because I made it for somebody with that user name. If I search on Col200, that route comes back on the search. So from your example, if somebody had Cheddar Gorge in the route title it would be searchable.

What I'd really like, is a set of maps, and tag browser - so i can see on the map all the tagged routes around me.

While I'm in Zurich, I also desperatly would like to have all the up coming cycling events on the map with estimated times and dates - that way I have the chance to ride out to see one (yeah, ok, swiss pigs fly)

and replace the flash elevation popup, with a floating JS one...

It'd be nice if others could add comments etc. to routes, similar to Wiki. Sometimes the author doesn't have the time to add tags to routes, so it'd be nice if others could add this.

Or is this already possible and I haven't figured out how to do it just yet?

I think someone already said this but it would be nice if i could show all my routes at once on one map. So I can see every road that i have been able to bike on. This would mean i would need to make the routes different colors as well.

Sorry if you can already do this, and i haven't found it yet.

    Great site though

Quick suggestion for the elevation profiles:

    - zooming capability
    - display percentages!

That would be even more awesome than it already is :-)
    Keep it up!

    Location hierarchy

Not that it makes much difference, but is there some reason that on the home page the location hierarchy is City/State/Country but on the general route list it's the opposite?
