hey all,

i am biking the willamette valley bikeway in a week and i need some major advice on places to sleep. the campgrounds are not so strategically placed to help break up the ride in a conveniant manner. if i have to bike 100 miles in a day i can do it, but i would prefer not to. in that case, do you know of any good (dry) places to sleep along the route that i am missing or possibly some good places for guerilla camping. guerilla camping might get tricky if i have to set up my small tent to stay dry. but i can manage. i guess i am just getting nervous because i leave soon and i still don't know where i will sleep or whether or not to bring my tent. PLEASE send me any advice you have, i will be eternally grateful.

blessings, alicia

I biked across the country this summer from Virginia to Oregon and I'm now back home in traffic heavy Paramus, New Jersey right near Route 17 and all the mall chaos. I'd really like to find safe (relatively anyway) bike routes on roads nearby so I can do 20-30 mile days if I want. I love the Bergen County bike path, but that 13.7 mile route gets old after a while. I found the Suffern to Ridgewood Loop that looks good, but I'd love more options.

 Hello,

I recently moved to the northwest suburbs of Chicago (Des Plaines area), having taken a job with Motorola. I am looking for a good route for a daily ~30 mile route. I know its almost winter, but Ive been stuck inside riding on my trainer since I moved here a couple months ago.

I ride a road bike, and I like to keep a decent average speed (~25 mph). I was spoiled where I lived last, having a nice bike trail that passed very near my residence. I recently began riding along roads, but again, I was spoiled with massive shoulders on the sides of the roads, and the lack of them here, along with the density of traffic makes me pretty nervous to ride them here.

To summarize, Im looked for a paved, ~30 mile loop around Motorola in Schaumburg, or somewhere near Des Plaines.

Let me know if such a place exists.

Thanks,

-Jerod

 Hello,

After many years of active cycling in my teens and early 20's, I had to give up the saddle because my wrists and neck simply couldn't take the stress anymore. But last year my girlfriend found a fairly nice used recumbent for only $200 USD and I was suddenly able to start riding again. Now I'm commuting to work almost every day by bike, I just turned 38 and I'm getting the itch to plan a long-distance cycling tour for the two of us. (or with a group would be fine too)

I've always wanted to go to Greece, so that was my first thought, something along the southern mainland, then hop a ferry out to Santorini, and then maybe on to Crete, or maybe the other way around... starting in Crete, then Santorini, then a couple of days on foot in Athens, then find something along the coast. Does anybody out there have any suggestions for this wanderlust wanting to see world from his comfy mesh seat?

I've been trying to research cycling in Greece, and I've gotten everything from "it's awesome" to "you'll surely die if you try to ride a bike here... if the motorists don't kill you, the dogs definitely will". What is it really like? Has anybody else here actually done the island-hopping cycle-and-ferry type trip? If you only get one chance in you life to visit Greece, what are the absolute must-visit places (Santorini is currently pretty high on my list).

If I were to describe a dream tour for us, it would be the kind of tour that involves 30-50miles per day along scenic routes, hopefully hopping from one little town to the next, staying in family run bed-and-breakfast type establishments as we go. And when we get to a place we really like, we might stay for a couple of days to see the sights and/or relax before moving on. I understand that in reality we probably won't find a trip exactly like that, but I hope it paints a picture of what we're looking for. We're not interested in hard-core training, mountain climbing or wicked-fast descents. And while we'll both be capable of dealing with hilly terrain, we don't want that to be the focus of the trip.

Any help/advice is greaty appreciated. Thank you all.

Kirby
Eugene, OR, USA

I will be moving to San Diego soon and hope to bike to work at UCSD. I found an awesome place to live, however I am dubious of the difficulty in biking to work from there, which may make me change my decision. If anyone has any inputs that would be great. The main problem is the 5/805 split and train tracks, which make that area devoid of bike paths.

The map from San Diego rideshare marks the portion of I-5 that I seem to have to use as bike-friendly, however I may be uncomfortable riding my bike on the expressway. Does anyone have any comments on this bit of express that I would have to ride on? From the map it actually looks like I would be on the on/off ramps as much as on the expressway. Is there another way to cross this area? (Tower road does not seem to be an option as it is gated and controlled by General Atomics). Looking at satellite images in Google Maps it looks like there are a few dirt paths in this area, however they too may be controlled by private businesses.

Besides that area, I am curious about the ascent back up Sorrento Valley Blvd. I am from Chicago and it is almost nearly flat. It's not that I have no experience on hills, just not regularly. So how is this ascent?

Thanks for any input!
