If Bikely shuts down, what happens to our routes?

Once in a while, a privately-held community site like this one suffers some financial or technical catastrophe. It dies and take its users' creations with it.

Bikely is too valuable of a resource to ever lose. Do third parties hold any site backups or database dumps? Are DB dumps available to the public? Or can anyone even be allowed to reproduce the site's content, given that Bikely gives its contributors a revokable license?

Google Street View

I find streetview really helpful when planning my route as I can visualise unfamiliar streets and know which lane to get in.

At the moment it seems there's no way to import Bikely maps back into Google maps so I can view the Streetview. Is there any method of getting the maps back onto Google?

Total Distance Keeps Changing

I've noticed that the total distance in my maps changes without any prompting from me. At 1 pm the distance says 99.8 miles. At 2 pm it is 103.1 miles. At 3 pm it says 101.7 miles. What's going on?

Server Down Time

Elevation Profile Drops to Zero

I've discovered when you use the insert track point feature into a map, it sets the elevation to zero instead of using the location's actual elevation. Didn't know if that was known or not.

Getting message - 413 Request Entity Too Large

Did a century ride last weekend, and tracked it with my Edge 705, but I'm getting the message above when I try to load the file. I'm using smart recording, so the file is as small as it can be out of the GPS - any solutions out there for making this route available? File size is 1.12 MB....

Route is a figure 8, so I tried to edit the gpx file with notepad, but bikely isn't recognizing the edited file.

Cant Seem to Upload My Route - GPX File

Im a new member, just joined tonight, and Ive saved a GPS route using Quo Mobile, which Im informed from the help is GPX XML v1.1. Ive tried to upload my route and i get the map page, but with no start point shown. I might be being a bit thick (Ive used the search function, honest) but cant seem to find a way of doing this. Is it because Im a new member that I cant upload a file, or is it my file thats somehow wrong. Incidently I can import the file and see my route in Quo v2 desktop. Thanks

Bikely on an Apple Mac Pro

I am trying to sort out elevation on a route at home to be verified by Audax UK. I have been advised to use BIkely, I have used other cycle map sites before.

When at work during my breaks, the map seems to work very well indeed and I have been very impressed. At work, my computer is a PC.

Whereas at home, the curser will not under any circumstances follow the road that I am clicking on. It sort of goes either right or left of centre, thus making the route inaccurate.

Does Bikely not work with Apple Mac's? I have the planner map on line via my GPS SATMAP and that does exactly the same thing, I have been told by SATMAP that their software is not compatible with Apple either.

Any comments or suggestions please.

Am I missing something ? Why doesn't bikely also show the time it took to ride the saved route ? The data is available in the GPX file... the total km are show but nothing about the time ?

Any suggestions ?

feature requests: insert-route and reverse-route

By adding two fuctions, insert-route and reverse-route, you add immense power to your offering.

insert-route lets people copy routes and then modify them as well as piece together routes. The route can be inserted either at the end, or (preferably) before/after the chosen point, much as you insert points now. All the points can be simply inserted. Of course the trick is identifying the route to insert. Perhaps this isn't too hard.

reverse-route is a very nice primitive that makes insert-route even more powerful for people constructing routes from route-lets (snippets, sub-routes). You simply reverse the order of all the points.

Cancel last click feature?

Bikely sometimes picks weird routes. I've just clicked a pt 1 km down a paved road and its given me a 15km route round an unpaved mountain track?

Because this involves 200 pts, it would take forever to cancel it pt by pt. is there a way to reverse that last click? Currently I have to cancel the whole route and start again!

If there isn't, would others agree the ability to reverse the effect of your last clcik would be a big benefit?

Revert to Last Saved Version

I love the Undo feature. It is a lifesaver. To extend the life of my mouse's left button, could you add a "super undo" - that is revert to the last saved version of the route?

Downloading and uploading deletes notes

In the old days of Bikely, I could download a .gpx file, edit it, and upload it, retaining the route notes in the uploaded/imported route. This allowed me to create a new route by combining two existing routes, or parts of existing routes, without having to retype or copy and paste the notes.

However now, when I download a route, and then upload it, the notes do not show up in the imported route. Does anyone know a solution or workaround for this problem? I'm using the Google Chrome browser, if that matters.

Upgrade Google Map to show new terrain option?

Would it be possible to upgrade the Bikely version of Google Maps so we can see at least the terrain (contours) option for our routes? I should think the Street View and Traffic and More>Photo options would also be useful.

Feature Request - Search via Zipcode

It would be a lot easier to find routes close to home if a search via zipcode feature was added. This would allow you to find routes that pass through your town, even if they don't start or end in your town, as well as routes in closeby neighboring towns. Right now, in order to find routes nearby, I have to think of every town that borders mine or every town in my county and manually type in each name. It leaves a lot of room for error. If a search via zipcode feature were added, I could find all of the nearby routes with a single search.

my route zig zags some of the same roads, this makes the visual trace difficult to follow. is there any way of changing the colour of the plot line depending how far around the route you are?

If I take a saved route, alter it and re-save, it over-writes the original. Often I want both, and the only way I can find is to redraw it from scratch.

Would others like a Save As option (like in Word) to be able to alter and then save a 2nd version.

hey all,

i am biking the willamette valley bikeway in a week and i need some major advice on places to sleep. the campgrounds are not so strategically placed to help break up the ride in a conveniant manner. if i have to bike 100 miles in a day i can do it, but i would prefer not to. in that case, do you know of any good (dry) places to sleep along the route that i am missing or possibly some good places for guerilla camping. guerilla camping might get tricky if i have to set up my small tent to stay dry. but i can manage. i guess i am just getting nervous because i leave soon and i still don't know where i will sleep or whether or not to bring my tent. PLEASE send me any advice you have, i will be eternally grateful.

Hi, I just joined today and as I expected, I always always have problems when trying out a new forum or website. I thought I would try a nice simple route I've done - Hythe to Dungeness and back, just to get the feel of the 'system'. As I expected, I immediately had problems.

I started with 'Create Route', then nearest city (Bikely hasn't heard of Dover as the map appears to be in Lancashire, so I went to Maidstone then dragged the map down to Hythe. Right, 'Start to Draw'. I presumed I click on the start ie Hythe then click progressively along the route before saving it. Nothing happened (time and time again) except for a message box saying I had to add points. I had added points. I've tried about six times to add this route but it seems to refuse to accept it.

What am I doing wrong?

I thought of 'Help' then the forum but doing a search on 'Starting Out' resulted in zilch.

guided bike tour--all winter!

I would like you to share with other bike riders that I am planning on heading south for a few months this winter, in past years I have spent time bicycling around southern Florida, and I know lots of free camping areas, free showers, cheap food, and how to live very frugally. It is cheaper to live on the beach in the Miami-Key West area, (70 + degrees day and night!) exploring the local interests during the day and relaxing at night with free entertainment, than to pay your heating bill up here in Colorado! So if anyone is interested in forming a traveling group, I will be glad to hire out to offer advice, bike support, and share info on the best spots to camp out on the beach and other places(I don't do motels, even hostels are too expensive for continued daily use, but others in the group could if they wished to use these). There is a definite benefit to having a group as opposed to going solo, in safety on the roads and watching over the bikes when parked, which duties I could assume while others explored libraries, museums, shopping, etc. So get back to me if you have a week or more and you may wish to find others to join you, I could host several groups throughout the winter months, even in diferent parts of Florida or doing a statewide tour. overtaking protocol

Hi All

Iv'e just returned to cycling after a long lay off. I used to ride on the road now its MTB. my question is this. If riding on a narow track or towpath and either I cach another rider or they cach me,how do we pass each other? Is the norm just to barge past regardless (I'm sure some will do this anyway) or if being passed should you pull over to let the faster rider go or what if the track is just to narrow will most riders have the sense to wait untill you can pull over

Well my boyfriend lives in anaheim and I live in norwalk. I usually just take hte 5 or the 605 &91, but lately gas and mileage has been to much and I'm planning on riding my bike, can anybody tell me a good route to take? like any riverbeds or safe street paths? any help would be good thank you =)

GPX/XML parsing issue with Motion-X gpx file?

Hi,

I am unable to successfully import a .gpx file generated by MotionX-GPS (for iPhone). The file contains 2445 track points. Other files generated by MotionX-GPS suffer a similar fate. When I import the gpx file to bikely.com, only 13 track points appear on the map. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a syntax issue with the file? The first 30 and last 11 lines of the gpx file appear below. Any help would be appreciated!
