This is a cue sheet for the Pont-Rhyd-y-Groes route 2 - Rhiwlas Bicycle Map. You can print it out for later use.

Cumulative Distance Where Notes Direction Elevation
0km 0km Again starting from P-R-y-G you may have parking issues unless you go up the road towards Ysbyty Ystwyth. Like Route 1 this starts with a monster climb. W 259° 145m
2.55km 2.55km The bridleway has been diverted here from through the farmyard ahead to around the left of the property. NNW 336° 254m
3.03km 0.48km Turn right onto the forestry fireroad. S 167° 235m
3.78km 0.75km Take the right fork here. I didn't go this way but it has to better than the swampy nightmare route I took when I did it!!! SSE 138° 314m
4.01km 0.22km Fork right again. S 165° 315m
4.53km 0.52km The OS map suggests the bridleway goes straight on here though I suspect you need to do a left and right skirting the clear fell area. SE 117° 362m
4.81km 0.28km Take a right away from the trees across the clear fell before the curve in the tree line starts to sharpen. SSE 150° 369m
4.91km 0.1km Take a right in the track T-junction. SW 209° 376m
5.08km 0.17km You're leaving the forest here (albeit clear fell) follow the fence line toward the derelict farm in the trees. I suspect you'll find the next 1/3 of a mile a bit boggy, but trust me, it'll be nothing compared with the route I took up from your right!! SW 215° 361m
5.31km 0.23km This is where you rejoin my route. Just follow your nose and pick the the best route on the ground. SW 212° 362m
5.67km 0.35km Nice spot up on the rocks on the left to sit and watch the world go by (though you'll be lucky to see anything move up here!!) SSW 194° 374m
5.72km 0.05km Turn left when you hit the major track. E 74° 385m
6.21km 0.49km I'm afraid it all gets a little bit vague up here. Watch as the track turns left from between the two hill tops. You need to leave the main track up ahead and go downhill to the right. SSE 156° 409m
6.28km 0.07km Fork right off the main track. It may help to know where you're aiming: look for the gateway off the moorland, down the hill to the right which leads into the fields and to the farm; aim for the gateway, but don't go through the gate, you'll be skirting the fields on the moorland side of the fence. SSW 184° 408m
6.48km 0.2km Hairpin back right on yourself and aim for that gate. WNW 281° 393m
6.62km 0.14km Don't go through gate, veer right and skirt the fields the path is reasonably obvious - this becomes a smashing worthwhile track. NNW 322° 378m
7.02km 0.4km There's a new fence here blocking the natural route. By now the bridleway is totally lost to me and I'm following my nose. This track makes sense, but it may not be the official route. I climbed up the fence line (steep uphill) then down the other side where I found a gate. N 369m
7.14km 0.12km Go through the gate and pick your way back down onto that track. It should be easy enough to see. SW 208° 384m
7.45km 0.31km There's a great tump just ahead to the left here where you can sit on top of the world and survey it (had my lunch here - think it was that one sunny day we had this summer!) NNW 357° 350m
7.92km 0.48km You should soon be able to see a bridleway gate below you just ahead NW 302° 376m
7.99km 0.07km Bridleway gate W 251° 375m
8.02km 0.03km Gate. NW 295° 377m
8.05km 0.02km Again the bridleway is vague up here, but this is the most navigable route towards it. Climb the hill and follow the grassy track over it and down the other side towards the old reservoir. NW 303° 377m
8.6km 0.56km Pick your way through the old mine workings. Believe it or not you're back on the bridleway. You see that ravine ahead of you? That's it!! If you're brave enough - down you go! Other wise there's a track along the top of the scree slope and there's another way down at the west end of the slope. SSW 202° 376m
8.79km 0.18km Still here? Turn right along the farm track. W 253° 325m
9.68km 0.89km Fork left through the gate onto the less well used track. As this goes downhill watch out for rocks and ruts hidden in long grass - this is where I cracked a rib. W 260° 334m
10.34km 0.66km Straight across the road onto another bridleway. Sorry this one's a bit boggy and over grown in places. W 264° 272m
10.63km 0.29km Left through the gate and follow the trees. WSW 229° 249m
10.7km 0.07km Right and through another gate, I think. W 266° 248m
10.77km 0.07km Stay in this field NW 295° 248m
10.84km 0.07km Left and through another gate. Head down the field towards the old farm houses, the bridleway runs between them. WSW 231° 248m
11.57km 0.74km Straight on from the tarmac lane into the farm track. This is an easy route to follow. My only concern here is the paw prints I saw in the mud. I have a dog and they weren't a dog's!! If they were a cat's it's the size of a horse!!!! ;-) WNW 274° 259m
14.42km 2.85km Turn right at the crossroads into the forestry. NNW 359° 279m
15.04km 0.61km This bridleway is fairly well concealed just after the fireroad junction. NW 296° 278m
15.08km 0.04km I haven't researched from this point. My original intention was a different bridleway just South West of here, but that was completely impassable. Head for the farmyard. NNW 339° 278m
15.14km 0.06km Take a left through the farmyard. W 263° 263m
15.28km 0.14km Not sure where the bridleway goes from here, can't see from Google. The OS map shows straight through the farm. You need to aim for the corner of the forest on the other side of the farm. My plot looks plausible but may not be correct. WNW 290° 248m
15.6km 0.31km I think you aim almost for the corner of the field. WNW 284° 231m
15.7km 0.1km I can see a faint line in the trees on the sat photos so I think this is the bridleway. WNW 291° 219m
15.9km 0.2km Again following a faint line in the trees cross the fireroad through the apex of the bend, bearing slightly to the right. NW 311° 220m
16.35km 0.44km I suspect you cross the fireroad again. WNW 287° 147m
16.6km 0.25km You should reach a junction with another bridleway where you can hairpin back on yourself to the right. ESE 91° 113m
17.04km 0.44km Bear left onto the fireroad. Sorry if I got you lost in that last bit!!! E 71° 128m
17.57km 0.54km On the OS map the bridleway appears to go straight on from here. However I think you come around the hairpin slightly to find it. SE 121° 170m
17.8km 0.23km Turn left onto the fireroad. E 87° 205m
18.45km 0.65km Take the right fork ahead. ENE 53° 252m
19.59km 1.14km Go straight on at the right hander in the fireroad onto a dirt track. ENE 64° 303m
19.65km 0.06km At the gateway you are usefully informed by an official sign that the bridleway has been diverted. However, not so usefully it doesn't tell how or whether the way marks are wrong. Aim to head down hill to your right below the rocky hilltops ahead. I turns into a nice little descent further on. E 75° 299m
20.13km 0.48km The track on the ground takes you into a right hand down hill swoop towards the trees at the bottom of the field. SSE 147° 257m
20.33km 0.2km Not sure where you need to be, but I think the old bridleway is the tree line and the new one runs through the field. Aim for convenient gates between fields. The bottom of the fields are very boggy. E 77° 234m
20.57km 0.24km I actually crossed between fields in the bottom right corner of this field, but it was very boggy. I think there's a more convenient gate further up (about here). In the next field aim for the rough patch about half way along the bottom fenceline. SSE 140° 217m
21.01km 0.44km Here ends the bridleway diversion (we are reliably informed by an indecipherable map pinned to a gatepost!) ESE 107° 211m
21.95km 0.94km Another of my untried suggestions! Follow the farm track to the farm. ESE 92° 254m
22.31km 0.36km Bear round to the right through the farm and into the field beyond ESE 101° 275m
22.4km 0.08km Head for the centre of the field then bear left to the corner where there looks to be an established route ENE 55° 284m
22.45km 0.05km In the next field aim for the T in the far fenceline with the fields beyond it (if you can see it). ESE 102° 289m
22.59km 0.15km Turn left then right to follow the established route to the road. NNW 345° 296m
23.53km 0.93km Yet more experimental routes, but this looks pretty clear. Straight on at the junction along a gravel/stone track. E 70° 342m
24.25km 0.72km You've been here before, but this time stay on the main track. E 74° 377m
24.62km 0.36km You need to take a left onto a much less well used track which winds its way downhill NNE 380m
25.19km 0.58km Go straight on at the crossroads. NNE 344m
25.55km 0.35km Go through the gate into the field and keep to the left edge. NW 302° 307m
25.75km 0.2km Left into the old lane by the ruined building. It was very boggy in the lane itself and you may be better off in the field to the right. WNW 292° 293m
25.95km 0.21km Turn right for a bit of deja vue. ESE 104° 267m
26.24km 0.29km As before, left into the diverted bridleway NNW 336° 254m
26.71km 0.47km Right onto the fireroad. S 172° 235m
27.52km 0.8km This time, take the left fork. E 84° 306m
27.73km 0.21km Take the right fork which veers away from the farm. Though it starts off muddy this track improves into one of this route's highlights. E 89° 304m
27.92km 0.19km Take a left where the trees open out. This turns into a fast downhill - enjoy! Eventually you'll reach a junction where you hairpin back to the left on yourself, you'll follow the main track around the hairpin. NNE 18° 322m
28.9km 0.98km Hairpin left. WNW 279° 260m
29.31km 0.41km When the track emerges out of the trees onto a gravel track, hang a sharp left and follow the gravel track. I haven't researched the remainder of this route. It's dependent on it being OK to cycle through the Hafod Estate. As far as I can tell, it's OK to cycle on the "forest roads". So there's one section I think could be an issue (at worst you have to push 300-400m). SW 211° 200m
29.7km 0.39km Right at the T-Junction. NNW 334° 165m
30.14km 0.44km Straight on at the hairpin junction WNW 274° 200m
30.33km 0.19km I think there's a T junction here - take a left. WSW 242° 190m
30.62km 0.3km It looks to me like you emerge from the forest here - so strictly speaking you may need to get off and push??? Follow the track round to the right ignoring the first track on the right. NNW 318° 171m
31km 0.37km I'd say you can start riding again from here. Bear left at the cross roads ahead onto the lesser used track or "forest road". W 265° 189m
32.52km 1.52km Bear left onto the road and you're back in the centre of Pont-Rhyd-y-Groes. W 255° 159m
32.65km 0.13km SSW 193° 144m
