This is a cue sheet for the Alameda High to Oakland downtown commute --alternate 1 Bicycle Map. You can print it out for later use.

Cumulative Distance Where Notes Direction Elevation
0km 0km Ride the "Verge" Oak Street is offically a "Verge" where bikes are recommended to ride intermixed with cars. You'll average 10mph along Oak because of all of the lights. Broadway has designated bike lanes and is the other parallel route to the bridge. DO NOT RIDE PARK STREET. And particularly do not ride Park Street in a pack --bicyclists are ticketed for riding more than two abreast in a lane in Alameda. And it really pisses off the people who live here against bicyclists. It's a small island, and we all know where you live! NE 30° 9m
0.22km 0.22km Central route to Broadway Alternate route to the bridge is taking the bike lane right at Central, then taking the Broadway bike lane up to Blanding. It adds a little length, but also cuts out one traffic light wait so its an even wash. It also lets you go by Nob Hill grocery store when you're returning. NE 28° 11m
1.07km 0.85km warehouse area Watch out for the rental cars from the strip mall. Rare, but absolutely cluess when they appear. SE 116° 3m
1.28km 0.21km Take the east side Take the east side of the bridge. Much easier than getting into a head-on collision with other bicyclists coming the other way! NE 32° 3m
1.66km 0.38km Take the freeway exit There's a bike pass you can't see from here. It's much easier this way than getting into a head-on with another bicyclist coming the other way! NE 35° 3m
1.8km 0.15km Jingletown Oakland Go straight along 29th and take the 7th street bike pass under the overpass. (Look for the yellow pole) Much easier for exiting the island to Embarcadero. NW 309° 7m
1.84km 0.04km Smelly fish area Where all the asian restuarants get their live fish for their tanks every morning. NW 300° 6m
2.03km 0.19km Asian fish market district Live fish are hauled in here and sold to different asian restaurants every morning. Smells like sea water. NW 306° 6m
2.14km 0.11km Merge with the freeway traffic You'll see a short little bike lane at the light. Aim for that --most of the traffic will not go straight, but wants to turn on red to the right of the bike lane. Be nice and don't block them. WSW 240° 3m
2.21km 0.07km Easy bike lane Now it gets easy. Bike lane along the waterfront. Be ready for stiff winds. W 265° 5m
2.91km 0.7km Coast Guard Island Most of the people going to Coast Guard Island don't know local laws. Be ready for the occasional 18 year old idiot driver at this intersection. NNW 348° 2m
2.95km 0.04km Just follow the bike lanes Easy ride if the wind isn't against you. And fairly safe NNW 355° 3m
4.46km 1.51km One way stop against us We have a stop sign this direction, the oncoming traffic going to the freeway doesn't. Give them the right of way. It's the law. WNW 283° 1m
5.09km 0.63km Embacardero Oakland Take the 5th street exit. WNW 290° 0m
5.28km 0.19km Open Gate? In the mornings the gate here is unlocked. Cutting though the parking lot to drive through more Canadian Geese can be fun. Warning: It's ALWAYS locked after 5pm, so don't expect to take this other shortcut back during the evening again. Ride along the creek to the 7ths street bike underpass. NE 33° 3m
5.41km 0.13km Ride on sidewalk to bike pass This light is too long and the student drivers can drive too crazy when they're late for class. Just use the bike pass under 7th street and avoid both. It's safer, and has ducks! WNW 291° 3m
5.66km 0.24km Down and around Down and around, underneath and out the other side. W 257° 0m
5.77km 0.12km Wasn't that fun? No waiting at the light, no student drivers. Cuts off 2 minutes some days. NNW 355° 2m
5.95km 0.18km Pedestrian bridge over creek A fun little up and down. NNW 329° -1m
6.02km 0.07km pedestrian bridge NE 26° 2m
6.12km 0.1km Museum and Laney College Merging with 10th street traffic can be a pain at times --ride the sidewalks to Fallon Street if necessary. Get ready for a bit of a climb. NW 295° 2m
6.57km 0.45km Chinatown Bit of a climb and long light delays. Lots of people want to turn right onto Oak on the red light. Try to give them space on the right while waiting at this light. NW 298° 10m
6.95km 0.38km Crossing guards for the students Sometimes there are crossing guards. Give them the right of way instead of running down the small children going to school. :-( NW 298° 11m
7.17km 0.22km Webster Street Made it to downtown. :-) NW 298° 14m
